Project: Mini Heat Shielding

Project Name: Ineos Grangemouth Escape Route (Jacobs)

Locker Mini Shields were attached to both sides and the roof to provide protection to personnel using the escape route. Complete Walkway is due for completion in early 2010.

Jacobs Engineering contacted Locker Heatshielding in June 2008 regarding a project at the Ineos Grangemouth processing plant. Recent expansion of the plant meant that a 25m escape walkway had to traverse a flare exclusion zone, passing through two separate flare stacks to the accommodation block and muster points beyond.

The radiant heat present within this zone was specified as 6.3kW/m˛, and as the maximum exposure for personnel making emergency access through this area is limited to 30 seconds, it was imperative that a complete protective solution for any personnel required to access this route was provided.

The expansion of the Inoes Processing plant and subsequent relocation of accommodation block and muster points necessitated the need for a safe escape route between two flare stacks.

Locker Mini and Ladder Heatshields reduce the radiant heat by in excess of 80% at a distance of 300mm behind the front face, so by installing the Heatshields on all three exposed sides of the escape route, the radiant heat would be reduced to around 1.3kW/m˛. This is below the threshold for the maximum radiant heat for continuous exposure.

Typically Locker would specify Ladder shields for the sides of the walkway as this incorporates an internal personnel protection mesh which prevents contact with the outer ‘Hot’ Radiant mesh.

The expansion of the Inoes Processing plant and subsequent relocation of accommodation block and muster points necessitated the need for a safe escape route between two flare stacks.

On this occasion however, as the structure was placed onshore without limitations to space, the design team were able to include an additional single file walkway within the structure with handrails on either side.

This prevented any possible contact with the Heatshields, and it was therefore decided that Locker Mini Shields would be attached to both sides plus the roof of the escape route.

The full supply of Heatshields was designed, fabricated and supplied ready for installation within a dedicated window so as to reduce the plant downtime to a minimum.
