Why is a Flare Deck Heatshield Required?

Flare deck heat shielding is a crucial component designed to protect personnel, equipment, and surrounding infrastructure from the intense heat generated by flaring operations on offshore drilling rigs. Flaring is the controlled burning of excess gases and hydrocarbons released during oil and gas production that cannot be otherwise used, and it produces a significant amount of heat that can pose various safety and operational risks.

The heat-shielding system is typically installed on top of the flare deck structure. It consists of an open grid serrated floor panel, bolted to heavy duty woven mesh ladder type heat shield. Construction is typically in all stainless steel 316L although other high temperature material can be used as required.

The Benefits of Locker Flare Deck Heatshield

One key feature of Locker offshore rig flare deck Heatshielding is its ability to withstand a front face surface temperature of 700 °C with an 87% reduction on the temperature recorded on the rear supporting steelwork. Metal mesh aids cooling and allows free movement of air and liquids. This whole structure is designed to reduce radiant heat exposure to critical components and personnel located below the flare deck. This design prevents excessive radiated heat exposure, minimising the risk of fire hazards and thermal damage to nearby equipment and structures.

In addition to radiant heat reduction, the Locker heatshield system is designed to withstand a universally distributed load of 5kN/m² as standard. Penetrations and kick plates can be incorporated as required.

Furthermore, the offshore rig flare deck Heatshielding is designed to be durable and resistant to harsh offshore environmental conditions, including corrosive saltwater, strong winds, and UV radiation. It undergoes rigorous testing and complies with industry standards and regulations to ensure its effectiveness and longevity in offshore settings.

Overall, the offshore rig flare deck Heatshielding is an essential safety measure, providing a critical barrier between the intense heat generated during flaring operations and the personnel, equipment, and infrastructure on offshore drilling rigs. It plays a crucial role in maintaining safe working conditions, protecting assets, and minimizing the potential risks associated with high-temperature flaring activities.

Summary of Benefits

  • Designed to incorporate complex shapes to fit around flare and ignition piping, pad eyes and davits as required.
  • 316L SS Flare Deck Heatshields have been front face tested to 700°C with resultant temperature of 92°C recorded on supporting steelwork behind the Heatshield.
  • Heatshields tested up to 90kW/m² with a reduction in excess of 80% behind the shield.
  • The use of radiant mesh as opposed to perforated plate results in lower noise generated through the Heatshields, which will be less than 75dBA at 25m/s
  • Manufactured as standard in 316L SS. Also 310S and Alloy 800H / HT can be provided if required.
  • Standard grating consists of 30 x 3mm bearing bars spaced at 44.44mm c/c with 15 x 2mm transverse bars spaced at 99.99 mm c/c with a single layer of 6.38mm aperture Radiant Mesh welded to the underside. Alternative grating configurations can also be accommodated.
  • Total combined weight of support frame and standard grid floor is 42kg/m² - 316L SS and 50kg/m² - 310S and Incoloy 800H / HT
  • Standard Uniform Distributed Load (UDL) of 5kN/m² up to 20kN/m² to accommodate placement of equipment on the top surface. Higher loads can also be accommodated and designed into the Heatshields as required. Loadings are based on Locker standard grating specification (44.44 x 99.99).
  • Flare Deck Shields are installed from the top surface with the radiant mesh welded to the underside of the serrated flooring, preventing dropped objects from passing through the flooring and reducing the need for rope access personnel during change out.
  • Can be easily installed in the Horizonal or Vertical planes as required.
  • Panels can be easily removed for transportation from shipyard to site.
  • Woven wire mesh promotes free movement of air and liquids.
  • Access hatches easily incorporated with no trip hazards.
  • Maintenance free for the lifespan of the project.

Easy Connect Maintenance Shield

Easy Connect Maintenance Shield

Locker Heatshielding, in conjunction with our partners at Galebreaker, have developed a range of Heat and Wind shields which are aimed at the maintenance and short-term installation market.

Fixings and Safety

The shields incorporate a patented ratchet mechanism to tension panels in place. They are easily connected to existing platform steelwork, directly hooking to an aligned flange, using either Lindapter CF connection technology where a flange is perpendicular to the shield, or split clamp mechanisms for connecting to SHS.

Quick to install, the shields can be placed in any area where protection from radiant heat and adverse weather is required without the need for additional supporting steelwork. The Maintenance shield is supplied in standard lengths for installation in the majority of locations with additional extension pieces provided to extend the length as required. Extensions are attached using the ratchets on the rear which are then covered by flaps which are laced to the extensions to create a continuous shield.

On completion of the maintenance work the shields can easily be dismantled and stored away for the next scheduled work.
